The Dining Hall

Its History

The U.S. Government donated the dining hall to Presbytery Point.  Originally it was a prisoner-of-war barracks at Camp Autrain.  Initially 20 feet wide by 90 feet long, workers rebuilt it to create the current dining hall.  Back then it was called the “Pan-Tree.”  The mining companies in Champion and Michigamme donated the materials and labor for remodeling the hall.   Many volunteer work crews also came in from various churches in the Presbytery to assist in the construction.

Its Future

The original builders designed the barracks for a lifetime of 30 years.  Therefore, Presbytery Point was to use the dining hall until the early 1980s.  But now it's approaching 60 years of usage and is in need of a different heating system, electric-power and plumbing upgrades, and a new roof.  A new septic system was already installed for the dining hall during the summer of 2006.

Presbytery Point's Board of Directors believes that it's time to construct a new dining hall, one with a capacity for 120 people.  The project will begin in August 2007, after the summer camping season is complete.  The architecture will be similar to existing cabins.  Post-and-beam construction with expansive roof trusses are planned for the new building, providing an open ceiling and roomy atmosphere.  The kitchen will be convenient, efficient, and safe for the staff to work in.  Preliminary floor plans include a scenic view of the lake from the eating area, accessible bathrooms, a modern kitchen, and a separate food-storage room, all on a single level.

Pledge Information

Undertaking this project will require our involvement, financially and physically.  God’s creation is in constant need of our stewardship.  Presbytery Point is no exception.  To complete this project, we will need at least $380,000 to make it happen.  Presbytery Point's Board of Directors asks you to remember the relationships, with God and with people, that grew from your experiences at Presbytery Point.  Your gifts will make this new dining hall a reality.
